High Frequency Words Worksheets | Heart words Flash words

Are you looking for a better way to teach high frequency words to your Prep/Kindergarten students? It consists of 80 of the most-commonly used words, both flash words and heart words, that your Prep or Kindergarten students will want to know!

What is a flash word and a heart word?

• A flash word is a word that can be easily decoded (sounded out). There is no tricky part so students can decode it “in a flash!”
• A heart word is a word that has a tricky part to remember, or a spelling pattern that hasn’t been taught yet. It can’t be easily decoded. There is a tricky part that students need to remember “by heart”

What’s included in this resource?

• This PDF resource includes 80 of the most frequently used words. Which words are included? A full list in listed below!

 Each focus word has its own worksheet. Each worksheet includes:

• • The focus word for students to trace
  • A sentence which features the focus word. Students can read the sentence and/or underline the focus word
  • Students “tap out” the sounds in the word. They colour that many circles to show how many sounds are in the word
  • Students “map out” the word into sound boxes
  • Students decide if the word is a heart word or a flash word
  • Students practise writing the word 2-3 times
  • Students find the focus word in a table of words. They colour each time they find the word

 Different font alternatives: This resource is available in NSW, SA, Vic, Tas, QLD and Century Gothic font. Simply print the version that suits your students!

• Two options of a contents page are included: one where the words are sorted alphabetically, the other where the words are sorted by sound
