Why you need this resource?

Did you know that for very beginning readers, so much mental effort goes into decoding the words that there is not much mental space for comprehension? That’s why it is best to teach comprehension skills when you are reading to the children.

In this nursery rhymes resource, as your students aren’t expected to decode the words, they have the mental space to explore comprehension strategies.

What is included in this resource?

There are two parts to this resource:

• Nursery rhyme PowerPoint with mini lessons – Ten nursery rhymes are included in PowerPoint (see below for a list). Each nursery rhyme has five mini lessons. (It is recommended to focus on one nursery rhyme per week, and do a mini lesson each day). Mini lessons include concepts such as: vocabulary, rhyming words, sequencing, the characters, the setting, altering the nursery rhyme, answering questions, text-to-text connections and text-to-self connections.
• Nursery rhyme posters – Each nursery rhyme has a matching printable poster. Each poster comes in both a colored and black and white version. There is also a ‘Nursery Rhymes’ banner included.

When to use this resource?

It is my recommendation to use this resource in your literacy block, when your students stop to have their fruit break. As they are sitting on the floor eating, you can read the nursery rhyme to them, and do one of the five mini lessons. The lessons are intended to be quick (approximately 5-10 minutes). Simply display the PowerPoint on your screen and read the instructions. No printed materials are needed.
