Teaching Foundation students to write an information book can feel like a BIG job.

Where do you start? How do you explain informative writing? How do you help students organise all the things they know about a topic? And how do you get them from a bunch of ideas to a finished information book?

This Informative Writing Unit breaks the whole process down into manageable, step-by-step lessons.

PLEASE NOTE

This Informative Writing Unit is included in my Term 4 Writing Unit.

If you already own the Term 4 Writing Unit, you already have this resource and do not need to purchase it separately.

If you don't own the Term 4 Writing Unit, you can purchase this Informative Writing Unit on its own. If you'd like the complete writing program, check out my Term 4 Writing Unit!

Take the guesswork out of teaching informative writing

Instead of asking students to sit down and “write some facts”, this unit builds their skills gradually.

Students begin by brainstorming animals they know about and choosing a topic for their information book.

They then plan what they want to write before moving on to drafting and writing their book one page at a time.

Students write about different aspects of their animal, including what it looks like, where it lives and what it eats, while using their plans and teacher modelling to guide their writing.

And then...

They get to share their finished books at a Book Fair!

No trying to work out what to teach next. No expecting students to produce a whole information book in one go.

Just a clear teaching sequence that takes students students from a simple idea to a finished information book.

A gradual approach that makes informative writing achievable

Students don't have to write an entire information book in one go.

They choose a topic. They plan it. They draft it. They write it. Then they share it.

One step at a time.
