How to Teach Students to Draw (Even If You’re Not an Art Teacher)

How to Teach Students to Draw (Even If You’re Not an Art Teacher)

We all know explicit instruction works wonders in reading, phonics, and maths. We model, guide, and scaffold. But when it comes to drawing, we often leave students to figure it out on their own.

The truth is, drawing is a skill. And like any skill, it improves with clear guidance and practice.

I’ve learned that when kids say, “I can’t draw,” what they really mean is, “No one’s ever shown me how.”

Step-by-Step Modelling

The best way to teach drawing is to break it into simple steps. Model one step at a time, and have students follow along, either on paper or a mini whiteboard.

Keep the instructions clear and consise. For example, if you are modelling drawing a spider, break it into steps, such as:

"Draw a circle".

"Add two eyes and a mouth".

"Add two triangles at the bottom of the mouth for fangs".

"On one side of the circle, add two legs".

"Add two more legs".

"On the other side of the circle, add two legs".

"Now, add two more legs".

"Now, colour your spider!"

It is a good idea to check in with the students before moving on. Even small cues, like asking students to give a thumbs up when ready, can keep everyone on track.

Practice Makes Perfect

Drawing improves with practice. Help students understand that, just like catching a ball, swinging on the monkey bars, or learning to read, we get better the more we practise.

Try setting up a quick “Draw Along Friday” where you model one drawing as a class. Over time, you’ll see students becoming more confident and creative in their own free drawing too.

Make It a Habit

Short, regular drawing sessions work best. Tie activities to themes or seasons to keep students motivated. Celebrate effort and display student work - it reinforces confidence and pride!
